Marking Nov. 11 with prayer and gratitude: A Veterans Day message from Bishop Gates
Last week during a family visit I happened upon mementos of my father’s naval service at the end of World War II.

My dad graduated from college in May 1945 and went immediately to basic naval training at the Great Lakes naval centCourtesy PhotoEdward Gateser. He was deployed from San Diego at the end of July to serve on the U.S.S. Currituck, an AV7 seaplane tender, in the Philippines.  Within days of his shipping out, the war ended.  In the months that followed, Dad served on the Currituck in Lingayen Gulf and Okinawa, and in support of the reoccupation of the Chinese mainland.

I am keenly aware, as ever was he, that my father was fortunate enough not to see combat-that he and his family were spared the fear and grief endured by so many in those years, and in the long list of wars since that time.

Veterans Day this year continues commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.  It is an occasion for us to recollect with solemn gratitude the cessation of that war, to pray for an end to warfare and strife in every time and place and to give thanks for those who have served with honor in the armed forces of our nation.

O Judge of the nations, we remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy. Grant that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines.  This we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
[The Book of Common Prayer, p. 839]

Faithfully and gratefully,

+Alan

The Rt. Rev. Alan M. Gates

Church Nursery
To:

Parents of Little One’s at Christ Church, Closing of the Nursery for now so we may expand our ministry to the youth.
Hi all,
We cleaned and moved the nursery and Sunday school upstairs creating a lovely nursery space for our smallest church goers in the Mary Case Classroom adjacent to the stage. It is truly a beautiful and much loved space by the children.   It is designed to be a safe place for children from birth to 3 years of age.
Re-creating a nursery at Christ Church became a passion of mine, once I brought our daughter into the world 5 years ago.   I remember being so excited when the nursery was up and running and gratefully signed up to rotate in as a caregiver one Sunday a month. I cherished the time to worship in peace without my daughter distracting me, as much as I cherished the moment she was brought over to participate in communion. The nursery is still in place for the 10 a.m. service and I am still involved in care giving, though my daughter is now in a regular Sunday School class, and she can’t wait to go to church each week.
Bringing her to nursery was a great introduction for her to experience the love of a church community, and then join me in worship and communion.   One of the proudest moments of my parenting came when my daughter began to sign the alleluia and recite the lords prayer with us in the service. She has been a part of Christ Church since her birth and I pray that this foundation will serve her well for the rest of her days.
I have gratefully coordinated our nursery volunteers – all mothers, fathers, and grandparents in our church community.Thank you all.  We look forward to working with the young people of Christ Church in a new and different way.
Sincerely,
Julie Sanders, aka Rachel’s mom
